Your Questions Answered

I'm a complete beginner is this a problem?

Not at all! you have to start somewhere, and why not start from the place where you have no bad habits or misconceptions about what to do.

Do I need my own instrument?

Not for the first session. There is a free first lesson for you to come along and see what's on offer. We can discuss what suits your needs best in terms of electric or acoustic, choice of instrument, budget, styles etc. after that most definitely yes. Progress on the guitar or any instrument is directly related to the amount of time you spend practicing between the lessons, so you will need to have something to work with.

Do I have to learn to read music?

No, not at all if you don't want to. If you want to pursue a career as a classical or session player then yes, other than that there is a convenient and simple form of notation called tablature which may be used to assist you in finding the right notes!

Surely I have to have natural talent to play?

It can help but in my experience, determination and commitment are the qualities that get the job done. I would say that most people can , it's wether or not you will that is the main issue.

When does tuition take place and for how long?

I am in the studio from about 2.30p.m. until 10.00p.m. and Saturday mornings. The lessons are typically 30 minutes, with 1 hour recording sessions available by  arrangement. I usually have a few slots available which can be arranged as  convenient.

Am I too young or too old to start?

You'll never know unless you try! 6 or 7 year olds usually have hands large enough to start playing melodies and a few simple chords so why not start as young as they can, there is no upper age limit, I am pleased to say I have highly successful students in their 60's and 70's.
