What is Taught
I do not at present cover jazz or classical styles but cover all the fundamentals of popular guitar playing in respect
of pop, rock, blues. heavy metal, folk, country and instrumental and therefore teach:
Guitar (Acoustic and Electric)
Rhythm playing - All basic, intermediate and advanced chord shapes. A variety of strumming patterns. A variety
of picking techniques. A variety of finger-style techniques (where appropriate).
Lead guitar – vibrato,
hammer-on, pull-off and string bending. Use of tablature (special notation for stringed instruments) .
An Introduction
to conventional staff view (standard notation). Basic, intermediate and advanced scales.
Bass
(Electric only)
Left and right hand techniques. Use of tablature (special notation for stringed instruments). An introduction to conventional
staff view (standard notation).
Standard riffs and patterns. Basic, intermediate and advanced scales.
Material
To maintain enthusiasm, tuition will often be based on favorite material, although there will be times when students
are required to practice certain set pieces to gain knowledge and experience. Each student will receive printed material in
various formats including tablature, staff view (conventional notation), chord charts, lyric sheets where necessary and audio
in the form of CDs or mp3. Content of material is always checked for anything potentially offensive. Students are encouraged
to embark on original and/or recording projects for which I have a comprehensive facility to record and produce a finished
mp3/CD of their work.
Grading
As a registered teacher with the RGT (Registry of Guitar Teachers), I can offer grading material for electric and acoustic
guitar, and am happy to provide all relevant assistance to students wishing to apply for grading.
